Data-driven business decisions and what’s in it for you?

Data-driven business decisions are becoming increasingly important in today’s competitive market. Companies are leveraging the power of smart software, such as TRUMPF’s OSEON production software, to identify bottlenecks in their operations and make informed decisions. For example, Rowlands Metalworks is using Industry 4.0 to make decisions on whether their next step should be to purchase a punch or a laser machine. Headland Technology is here to identify the next steps for businesses, for example, which processes to automate and which areas to invest in. With data-driven decisions, companies can make more informed decisions that will help them remain competitive and successful in the long term. Manufacturers like Rowlands Metalworks that embrace the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 are improving profits and creating jobs. Integration of technologies such as machine-to-machine communication, sensors, advanced software, data analysis, modelling and simulation, automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence results in “smartness” across all segments of the manufacturing process, including the supply chain.

The application of an effective strategy

The implementation of Headland Technology’s successful strategy is essential for the success of Rowlands Metalworks. To ensure the company reaches its goals, the Headland Smart Factory experts identified the steps needed to implement the strategy and develop a plan to carry out those steps. During our initial visit to Rowlands Metalworks, Headland Technology conducted a thorough assessment of machine and office efficiency, with a specific focus on the laser and bending sections of the manufacturing process. Initially, Rowlands Metalworks believed that their next factory expansion would be to invest in Laser or Combination machines, however, our data-driven approach revealed there was a large bottleneck in the bending section.

Small changes with a big impact

We suggested changes to the workflow and process, as well as the implementation of new technology and machinery. We also provided training and guidance to the staff to ensure that the new processes were followed correctly. In addition, Rowlands Metalworks implemented several key changes to its operations to increase efficiency and productivity. One of the changes includes relocating remnant sheet locations and implementing a new strategy that focuses on maintaining only high-value stock items. This change has allowed for more efficient use of space and has helped reduce the amount of time needed to locate and retrieve items. With a change to the stock management system, Rowlands Metalworks has also increased the number of brake press operators and cross-trained them to assist in other areas of the manufacturing process. This has helped to reduce bottlenecks and improve overall production flow. The company has also taken our advice to heart and is currently in the process of implementing additional changes to further improve efficiency and productivity, including further training for programmers that Headland Technology has carried out.

To sum it all up – short and sweet

Overall, the changes that Rowlands Metalworks has implemented have been successful in improving its operations. The new stock management strategy has been a great success, allowing for more efficient use of space and resources. The increase in brake press operators has also helped to reduce bottlenecks, leading to a smoother and more efficient workflow. Overall, these modifications have been beneficial and have helped to improve the efficiency of the production process. The implementation of Headland Technology’s recommended changes ensures that Rowlands Metalworks remains ahead of the competition and a leader in the industry for years to come.

We were pleased to hear that the changes had already had a positive impact on their profits, and we are confident that this trend will continue as they continue to refine their processes. We look forward to continuing to work with Rowlands Metalworks and helping them to achieve their goals.

Mitchell Dowling, Smart Factory Consultant:

“And while keeping up with the pace of technological change can feel overwhelming, costly and potentially insecure at times, it’s critical that manufacturers increase connectivity and adopt digital technologies to make better informed, data-driven decisions. It is very satisfying to see our customer’s shop floors transform into smart factories. Rowlands Sheetmetal has made the first step.”

Increasing Profits

Smart manufacturers boost profits through improved quality, faster throughput, less maintenance and downtime, reduced material waste and faster decision-making. Their smart processes also enhance worker safety, reducing insurance and medical costs.
